As a former Texas girl, I do love a Diet Dr. Pepper! I agree that carrying a large water bottle with you at all times really solves this issue! And I think it's fine to indulge in a soda now and then -- I was just so addicted to Diet Coke it could not have been healthy. Thanks for sharing your story!

I don't know if everyone has the reaction you described, but I certainly did. It's possible diet drinks work for some people and not for others. My thinking is that if you are using diet drinks and still struggling with cravings or weight management, why not try to wean yourself off and see how you do on plain water. For me it's been a game changer, but I do understand that sweet drinks can be one of life's simple pleasures. So I don't want to be the food (or drink) police!

I could have told them that years ago. I used to be a heavy Diet Coke drinker, but stopped cold turkey one day when I was talking to a friend who had been diagnosed with brain cancer (he died several years later). One of the questions his doctors had asked him was whether he drank Diet Coke and if so, how much. He was a theatrical stage manager and drank probably 7-8+ cans a day during productions and rehearsals. When I heard that, I figured there had to be a reason they asked, so I quit drinking them immediately.

Now I drink water, coffee, hot tea, and the occasional glass of wine or beer. And once I quit drinking, I stopped gaining weight and lost some. Not a lot but now that I am actively losing weight, I thank myself for giving up soda so many years before.

I have battled with my weight all my adult life, but 20 years ago, I learned to never DRINK my calories. My 40 oz. Stanley is a constant...refilling it twice each day, so roughly 120 oz. of water daily. But I do love a Dr Pepper now and then :-).

All fake sugar is basically evil. It makes you and me crave more sweets. It also has made me very sick when I’ve consumed a lot of throat lozenges with fake sugar. Just stop using it. I’ve lost 30+ lbs, cutting out fake sugar and most real sugar. Real fruit is my sweetener.
